My Journey with Reiki

Updated: Nov 7

In April of 2023, I felt a strong, yet gentle nudge to expand my understanding of what Reiki was. Up until that point, I had known a few Reiki Masters, but what exactly were they up to? It all seemed very mysterious to me!

First, let's begin with understanding what the word Reiki means:

  • 霊 (Rei) – Often translated as spirit, soul, or universal. In Reiki teachings, Rei refers to the spiritual, sacred, or higher intelligence that guides life. It implies a universal, unseen wisdom that flows through everything.

  • 気 (Ki) – Translates as life force energy (the same concept as chi in Chinese or prana in Sanskrit). It’s the vital energy that animates all living beings. When Ki is flowing freely, we feel vibrant and healthy; when it’s blocked, imbalance or illness may arise.

So together: Rei + Ki = “Spiritually guided life-force energy.”

For two years I’d been opening space and guiding consistent conscious connected breathwork journeys in community. I’d trained my eyes, hands & heart to read the language of the physical body: where the shoulders held tension, where the chest softened on an exhale, where there was fear living... What I didn’t fully realize at the time, was that those skills were training something subtler, too. I was also becoming attuned to people’s energy bodies, a felt sense of how lifeforce moved (or didn’t) through the chakra system and that attunement opened a door to Reiki.

The experience of going to my Reiki training felt familiar and new at once. Familiar because my body already knew how to listen- yet new because the language shifted to symbols & their unique purposes, meridians, downloads, guides and balancing chakras. After Level One I knew I was to continue on the journey until I would receive my Reiki Masters and I am so grateful I listened to the nudge that opened the door to Reiki. It was also an easy yes to return to work with the wonderful Erin Lee of HeavenLee Messenger!

What I love most about learning Reiki, is how complimentary it's been to the work I do with breathwork & sound. These three modalities have a beautiful synergy. While breathwork may stir up strong physical and emotional releases, reiki can help calm the body’s energy field, grounding and soothing the nervous system so integration happens with more ease. As breathwork may loosen suppressed emotions, Reiki is there to help clear stagnant energy from the chakras and aura, creating space for release. While breathwork may heighten sensitivity to bodily sensations, Reiki brings awareness to the subtle layers of energy. Together, they help people feel and trust their connection to both the physical and energetic aspects of self.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned on this path, it’s that healing is rarely one-dimensional. Breathwork and Reiki each carry their own magic, one invites us to actively participate in moving energy with the power of our breath, and the other allows us to soften into receiving as life-force energy flows where it’s needed most.

AND when woven together with the healing frequencies of 432hz crystal chakra bowls..WOW! The support felt is truly undeniable! The addition of crystal bowls invites the body to a natural state of harmony and often folks report feeling more relaxed, centered, and peaceful from not just receiving Reiki, or connecting with their breath, but also through the healing vibrations of having each 432hz chakra bowl played during their session.

If you’ve been curious about reiki, breathwork and/or sound healing, I encourage you to give yourself the gift of trying all three and perhaps doing so together at once! It's an honour to be sharing these energy modalities with you and I look forward to connecting with you soon!
